In the fourth book of the "Pretty Little Liars" series, the four girls' lives are out of control. Because of Emily's sexual preferences, her parents send her to small town Iowa to live with her conservative aunt and uncle. Spencer is terrified she is somehow responsible for killing Ali. Aria's boyfriend/teacher got fired and landed in jail because of their steamy romance. But of the four girls, Hanna's situation is the worst--she was hit by a car and her life now lies in the doctor's hands. What shakes the girls' lives even more is why Hanna is in the hospital. "She knew too much." That's what "A" texted each girl right after she ran over Hanna. Hanna had figured out who "A" was and she paid dearly for that knowledge. The former BFFs become closer once again as they struggle to regain control over their lives, figure out who "A" is, and discover who killed Ali. While Shepard's suspenseful story is filled with lots of twists and turns, most readers will uncover the mysterious identity of "A" before the plot reveals it, which leads to some disappointment. The characters are identifiable, if at times a tad annoying in their selfishness and otherwise cattiness. All in all, the book is a decent addition to the series.
